The Kindle Fire shows off some early CyanogenMod7 love

Kindle Fire CM7

Let's start off with this -- no it's not ready, and no we don't know when it will be. Now that we got that out of the way, XDA forums member JackpotCalvin has gotten a build of CM7 to boot on the Kindle Fire. While it is still an early build, and the image rotation is off, the developer says he knows how to do some fixes to get it more polished, and we can hope for a build we can play with in the coming weeks. This is definitely a good sign for those hoping to hack up their Kindle Fire!

Daniel Radcliffe 'Thrilled' For Darren Criss On Broadway

'Glee' actor taking over for 'Harry Potter' star in 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.'

After a very successful and critically acclaimed run on the Great White Way, Daniel Radcliffe will very soon be ending his run in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and passing the torch to "Glee" star Darren Criss, who will take over on January 3.

When MTV News caught up with Radcliffe -- who we named as the actor we're most thankful for in 2011 -- we asked for his thoughts on his successor and whether he had any decision or veto power in Criss being added to the cast.

"Oh God, no. I don't have any power over those things at all, nor should I," Radcliffe said. "I think it's fantastic. I'm actually kind of thrilled. He went to the same high school as a couple of the guys in our show did. I think he's really talented. I've not met him yet, but I'm sure he's very nice. He's a very, very talented guy, and I'm sure he'll do a great job."

Radcliffe is bummed for Criss that he only gets to perform the "Succeed" role for three weeks, due to his busy "Glee" work schedule.

"I feel slightly sorry for him in a way," Radcliffe said. "I needed time with it to get it right, and you don't have that, because obviously he has to go back to 'Glee.' I'm sure if it was up to him, he would have liked to do a longer run."

Although the two stars have yet to meet, they share a mutual admiration for each other. "I've seen a few episodes [of 'Glee']," Radcliffe admitted. "I haven't seen [Criss] in it, but I've seen three or four episodes probably. I liked it. My girlfriend is really into it."

Cain tells aides he is reassessing his campaign

ADVANCE FOR SUNDAY, NOV. 27 AND THEREAFTER - FILE - In this Oct. 3, 2011 file photo Republican presidential candidate, Herman Cain stops to address the media as he arrives for a meeting with developer Donald Trump, in New York. He's a mathematician, a minister, a former radio talk show host and pizza magnate. But most of all, Herman Cain is a salesman. And how he sells. "The sleeping giant called 'we the people' has awakened," Cain thunders, pacing the stage in his trademark dark suit, brown fedora and "lucky" gold tie, delivering a rollicking, 45-minute performance that evokes an old-fashioned church revival, complete with cries of "Amen" from his audience. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster, File)

ATLANTA (AP) ? Herman Cain told aides Tuesday he is assessing whether the latest allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior against him "create too much of a cloud" for his Republican presidential candidacy to go forward.

Acknowledging the "firestorm" arising from an accusation of infidelity, Cain only committed to keeping his campaign schedule for the next several days, in a conference call with his senior staff.

"If a decision is made, different than to plow ahead, you all will be the first to know," he said, according to a transcript of the call made by the National Review, which listened to the conversation.

It was the first time doubts about Cain's continued candidacy had surfaced from the candidate himself. As recently as Tuesday morning, a campaign spokesman had stated unequivocally that Cain would not quit.

Cain denied anew that he had an extramarital affair with a Georgia woman who went public a day earlier with allegations they had been intimate for 13 years.

"It was just a friendship relationship," he said on the call, according to the transcript. "That being said, obviously, this is a cause for reassessment."

He went on: "With this latest one, we have to do an assessment as to whether or not this is going to create too much of a cloud, in some people's minds, as to whether or not they would be able to support us going forth."

Saying the episode had taken an emotional toll on him and his family, Cain told the aides that people will have to decide whether they believe him or the accuser. "That's why we're going to give it time, to see what type of response we get from our supporters."

Cain has denied the affair as well as several other accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior that have dogged his candidacy over the past month. He had been publicly resolute about pressing ahead even as his standing in public opinion polls and his fundraising started to slide.

But in the conference call, he pledged only to keep his imminent schedule, including a foreign policy speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan later Tuesday that he promised to deliver with "vim, vigor and enthusiasm."

One participant on the call, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the conversation, described the tone as positive but also noted the uncertainty coming from Cain.

After the conference call, Cain attorney Linn Wood told AP: "Any report that Mr. Cain has decided to withdraw his candidacy is inaccurate."

"I think they are assessing the situation, just as I would expect the campaign to do or any prudent business person to do," said Wood. He added that he would hate to see what he described as false accusations drive Cain out of the race for the presidency.

On Monday, Ginger White said in an interview with Fox 5 Atlanta that her affair with Cain ended not long before the former businessman from Georgia announced his candidacy for the White House.

"It was fun," said White, 46, as she described Cain buying her plane tickets for a rendezvous in Palm Springs, Calif. "It was something that took me away from my sort of humdrum life at the time. And it was exciting."

Cain went on television to flatly deny White's claims even before the report aired.

"I didn't do anything wrong," he said then. On Tuesday, he told his staff "I deny those charges, unequivocally," and went on to say he had only helped White financially "because she was out of work and destitute, desperate."

Seemingly out of step with Cain's denials, his lawyer issued a statement Monday that included no such denial of the affair and suggested that the media ? and the public ? had no business snooping into the details of consensual conduct between adults.

Cain's response was faster and more deliberate than he had managed when it was reported that three women alleged he had sexually harassed or groped them when he was the president of the National Restaurant Association in the mid- to late 1990s. The trade group paid settlements to two women who had worked there.

As some conservative Republicans sought an alternative to Mitt Romney, Cain surged in the polls while pushing his 9-9-9 tax plan and providing tough criticism of President Barack Obama during televised debates.

But as the harassment allegations surfaced, Cain stumbled in explaining his views about U.S. policy toward Libya and other foreign policy issues, creating an opening for rival Newt Gingrich to assert himself as a more reliable, seasoned politician to challenge Romney and even Obama. Cain fell in the polls and Gingrich began to rise.

In her TV interview, White said she decided to come forward after seeing Cain attack his other accusers in an appearance on television.

"It bothered me that they were being demonized, sort of, and being treated as if they were automatically lying, and the burden of proof was on them," she said. "I felt bad for them."

She said she first met Cain in the late 1990s in Louisville, Ky., when he was president of the National Restaurant Association. They had drinks and he invited her to his hotel room, she recalled.

She quoted Cain as telling her, "You're beautiful to me and I would love for us to continue this friendship," then produced his personal calendar and invited her to meet him in Palm Springs.

White has been accused of lying before. A former business partner, Kimberly Vay, filed a libel suit as part of a larger business dispute with White. Court records show a state judge ruled in favor of Vay because White failed to respond to the suit. Vay's attorney, Kurt Martin, said a jury must still decide whether to award damages.

White's attorney, Edward Buckley, acknowledged the libel suit. He said White thought the libel claim had been settled as part of a larger settlement.

Tokyo retains title as Michelin's gourmet capital (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Tokyo retained the title of the world's gourmet capital on Tuesday, when the Michelin guide awarded it more stars than any other city for the fifth year in a row.

Tokyo restaurants also won more top awards than last year with 16 given the three-star rating, which Michelin defines as "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey". That is two more than last year and compares with 10 for Paris.

Fourteen of Tokyo's top spots serve Japanese cuisine and two French.

In the 2012 edition of the Michelin restaurant guide for Japan's capital, Yokohama and the adjacent coastal area of Shonan launched on Tuesday, Tokyo sushi restaurant "Yoshitake" shot to the top ranking in its first listing.

Restaurant "Koan" in the Shonan area covered for the first time also joined the ranking with three stars, bringing the total three-star haul of the Tokyo-Yokohama-Shonan area to 17.

Tokyo's "Ryugin" was promoted from two to three stars. A Korean restaurant in Tokyo, "Moranbong" joined the list with two stars, becoming the highest-ranked Korean restaurant in the world.

Among 247 starred Tokyo restaurants, 52 received two stars and 179 received one star. By comparison, Paris has only 70 starred restaurants in the guide published by the French tire maker.

The selection features a range of styles of Japanese dining from fugu -- puffer fish that can be lethal if improperly prepared -- sushi and tempura to "salaryman" favorites such as soba buckwheat noodles and yakitori grilled chicken skewers.

The awards are highly respected in Japan, one of the world's most food-obsessed nations and the guide's latest edition marks continued expansion of Japan's coverage.

"Since the first publication of the guide in 2007, we have enriched the selection by expanding the area. Starting from Tokyo in 2007, we now cover 7 areas in our two guides: Tokyo, Yokohama, Shonan, and Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara," Bernard Delmas, president of Nihon Michelin Tire said in a statement.

Tokyo's three-star Japanese restaurants are Araki, Azabu Yukimura, Esaki, Hamadaya, Ishikawa, Kanda, Koju, Ryugin, 7chome Kyoboshi, Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten, Sushi Mizutani, Sushi Saito, Sushi Yoshitake and Usukifugu Yamadaya. The French restaurants are Joel Robuchon and Quintessence.

In Yokohama, Japanese restaurants Chiso Kimura, Masagosaryo and Sugai earned two stars, and 14 earned one. Two restaurants in Shonan earned two stars and 26 one star.

In a separate edition for Japan's Kansai region published last month, centered on Osaka and the ancient capital of Kyoto, 15 restaurants garnered three-star ratings.

The first Michelin restaurant guide, aimed at drivers in the early days of motoring, was published by the tire company in 1900, and the star rating system was introduced in the 1920s.

The company only ventured out of Europe for the first time in 2005, with its guide to New York. Its Tokyo guide, launched late in 2007, was its first in Asia, though it has since added Hong Kong.

Dr. Dre's Slim The Mobster Drops 'Vivid' War Music

Slim tells Mixtape Daily about his new release, featuring Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar.
By Rob Markman

Slim the Mobster

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables
Mixtape: War Music

Headliner: Slim the Mobster Key Cameos: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar Essential Info: When it comes to finding raw hip-hop talent, Dr. Dre's ear is golden. The architect behind N.W.A's groundbreaking sound went on to discover the likes of Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Game and, more recently, Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster. On his new mixtape, War Music, Slim, representing L.A., looks to keep the Good Doctor's streak of picking talent going strong.

The Aftermath Psychopath gets off to a good start on "Dreaming," featuring Nikki Grier. On the soulful track, Slim contemplates the consequences of his street past in the face of his newfound rap success. "I'm followed by these demons/ Forgive me for living like that/ Even when I'm dreaming/ The streets keep pulling me back," he raps on the song's hook.

"I like this record because it talks about how, us as young artists, we work, and there is always something from our past — like, if you're really in the street, then it's something that will always hold you back," he explained.

Kendrick Lamar shows up on "Whose House," "What Goes Up" features Snoop Dogg, Mobb Deep's Prodigy gets busy on "Martyr," and Dr. Dre makes a key appearance on "Back Against the Wall." On the cut, Dre spits a spirited verse as he rhymes, "Now I'ma do this like my life depended on it/ My kids and my wife depended on it," making it clear he's still hungry. A lot of Slim's material is murderous, but there is a message. Songs like the shooter's ode "Gun Play" are balanced out by cautionary tales such as "South Central Blues."

On "See It," Slim gets lyrical, intertwining his bars with a vocal sample, noting that the materialistic images rappers often put in their music aren't always their reality. "It's a lot of different things goin' on in music, and some of us don't really paint vivid pictures, and I thought this record was kind of vivid," he said. "What I was talking about, you could really understand what I'm saying and, more so, you can see it."

Democrats, Republicans trade blows on tax cuts (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Democrats and Republicans in Congress on Monday exchanged their first blows in a battle over extending a payroll tax cut for workers, the latest in a series of polarizing fights that has worried investors.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned that failure to continue the tax holiday would hurt U.S. economic growth and could, according to some economists, push the country back into recession.

The payroll tax cut for workers that went into effect at the beginning of 2011 has put about $1,000 in the average worker's pocket and helped to shore up consumer spending.

The Senate could vote on a measure extending and expanding it as early as Thursday, according to Democratic aides. The $255 billion cost of the legislation would be paid for with a new 3.25 percent tax on income over $1 million a year.

Republicans are expected to block it, in part because of the tax on the wealthy that they say will stifle job creation.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Democrats should schedule votes on measures that have bipartisan support, instead of "symbolic show-votes that we know won't lead to anything except more tension and political acrimony."

The two parties have battled fiercely this year over the best way to improve the struggling U.S. economy and create jobs to reduce a 9 percent unemployment rate.

The acrimonious debates brought the United States to the brink of a first-ever debt default in August and stalled negotiations last week on a deficit reduction plan aimed at slowing the growth of the country's $15 trillion debt burden.

Fitch Ratings on Monday gave the United States until 2013 to come up with a "credible plan" to tackle its ballooning deficits or face the downgrade of its coveted AAA rating.

Some economists have warned that letting the payroll tax cut lapse could shave anywhere from 0.75 of a percentage point to 1.5 percentage points from economic growth. The latest economic data show that the U.S. economy grew at a 2 percent annual rate from July through September.

"The potential impact on the larger economy is downright scary," Reid said on the Senate floor.

Reid will have to find a way to gain enough support from Republicans, who are wary about allowing the tax cut for wage earners to expire ahead of the 2012 elections but do not want to add to already huge U.S. budget deficits.

MULTIPLE SENATE VOTES EXPECTED

If Democrats fail to win passage in the Senate this week, Reid said he would push for additional votes in December, before the current session of Congress comes to an end.

"We are not going to let this lapse," he said, predicting it could take up to three tries to pass a payroll tax cut extension.

Reid refused to comment to reporters when asked whether future versions of the legislation could try to pay for the tax cuts without targeting the very wealthy.

A Senate Democratic aide raised the idea of using future savings from U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan to help defray the cost of lowering the payroll tax. Using such future savings for current economic stimulus was discussed in the deficit-reduction negotiations that collapsed last week.

The current payroll tax cut that is set to expire on December 31 reduced workers' taxes, which are used to fund the Social Security retirement program, to 4.2 percent, from 6.2 percent.

Now, Democrats want to pare it back to 3.1 percent to put $1,500 in cash in the hands of about 120 million families.

Businesses would also get a tax holiday by cutting the 6.2 percent tax in half. To encourage more hiring, companies would not have to pay any payroll tax on newly hired workers under the Democratic plan.

While Republicans have either expressed opposition to cutting the payroll tax or been tepid to renewing it, at least one Republican said a deal was possible by year's end if it does not increase taxes on the wealthiest.

Senator Patrick Toomey, interviewed Sunday on ABC's "This Week" program, said, "I think probably some package of that with other features might very well pass." But he did not elaborate on a way to pay for a payroll tax cut he could support.

Toyota unveils high-tech concept car ahead of show (AP)

TOKYO ? Toyota's president unveiled a futuristic concept car resembling a giant smartphone to demonstrate how Japan's top automaker is trying to take the lead in technology at the upcoming Tokyo auto show.

Toyota Motor Corp. will also be showing an electric vehicle, set for launch next year, and a tiny version of the hit Prius gas-electric hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public this weekend.

But the automaker's president, Akio Toyoda, chose to focus on the experimental Fun-Vii, which he called "a smartphone on four wheels" at Monday's preview of what Toyota is displaying at the show.

The car works like a personal computer and allows drivers to connect with dealers and others with a tap of a touch-panel door.

"A car must appeal to our emotions," Toyoda said, using the Japanese term "waku waku doki doki," referring to a heart aflutter with anticipation.

Toyota's booth will be a major attraction at the biannual Tokyo exhibition for the auto industry. Toyota said the Fun Vii was an example of what might be in the works in "20XX," giving no dates.

The Tokyo show has been scaled back in recent years as U.S. and European automakers increasingly look to China and other places where growth potential is greater. U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co. isn't even taking part in the show.

Toyota's electric vehicle FT-EV III, still a concept or test model, doesn't have a price yet, but is designed for short trips such as grocery shopping and work commutes, running 105 kilometers (65 miles) on one full charge.

The new small hybrid will be named Aqua in Japan, where it goes on sale next month. Overseas dates are undecided. Outside Japan it will be sold as a Prius.

Japan's automakers, already battered by years of sales stagnation at home, took another hit from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which damaged part suppliers in northeastern Japan, and forced the car makers to cut back production.

The forecast of demand for new passenger cars in Japan this year has been cut to 3.58 million vehicles from an earlier 3.78 million by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Toru Hatano, auto analyst for IHS Automotive in Tokyo, believes fuel efficient hybrid models will be popular with Japanese consumers, and Toyota has an edge.

"The biggest obstacle has to do with costs, and you need to boost vehicle numbers if you hope to bring down costs" he said. "Toyota has more hybrids on the market than do rivals, and that gives Toyota an advantage."

Toyota has sold more than 3.4 million hybrids worldwide so far. Honda Motor Co., which has also been aggressive with hybrid technology, has sold 770,000 hybrids worldwide.

Toyota is also premiering a fuel-cell concept vehicle, FCV-R, at the show.

Zero-emission fuel cell vehicles, which run on hydrogen, have been viewed as impractical because of costs. Toyota said the FCV-R is a "practical" fuel-cell, planned for 2015, but didn't give its price.

"I felt as though my heart was going to break," Toyoda said of the turmoil after the March disaster. "It is precisely because we are in such times we must move forward with our dreams."

(AP) ? Landry Jones threw for 256 yards, Blake Bell punched in two short touchdown runs and No. 12 Oklahoma set up a Bedlam showdown for the Big 12 championship by beating Iowa State

Trey Franks finished with 88 yards rushing on two long reverses to set up scores for the Sooners (9-2, 6-2 Big 12), and Michael Hunnicutt matched his career-high with four field goals.

Rebounding after allowing a school-record 616 yards allowed last week in a 45-38 loss at Baylor, Oklahoma held Iowa State (6-5, 3-5) to a season-low 245 yards and only let the Cyclones score after James Winchester's snap sailed over the head of punter Tress Way in the first quarter.

Oklahoma will visit No. 4 Oklahoma State next week with the winner earning the Big 12 title.

The Cyclones didn't sustain a drive for longer than 35 yards and got their only points on Jared Barnett's 10-yard touchdown pass to Albert Gary one play after Oklahoma's botched punt. They got shut out the rest of the way, failing in their chance to pull off another monumental upset eight days after the biggest win in school history last week against then-No. 2 Oklahoma State.

Iowa State hasn't beaten ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks since 1974 and was trying to win for just the sixth time in 76 meetings with Oklahoma all time.

Each team turned it over four times in a game played in front of thousands of empty seats at sold-out Owen Field, with winds sustained at over 30 mph and gusting beyond 40 mph.

The Sooners were able to find enough offense to win it. Bell scored on a 3-yard run and a 1-yarder, and Oklahoma settled for field goals on four other red zone possessions.

After being practically unstoppable in the scoring zone a week ago at Baylor, Bell ran into trouble early on against the Cyclones. He was stuffed on Oklahoma's first red zone possession, leading to Hunnicutt's 20-yard field goal, and then threw an interception to Jake Knott the next time.

But the Sooners kept going back to their third-string quarterback, who last week joined J.C. Watts and Jamelle Holieway as the only quarterbacks in the program's history with four rushing TDs in a game. He scored on a 3-yard keeper in the second quarterto give Oklahoma the lead to stay, then smashed his way into the end zone from a yard out on the next possession to make it 17-6.

Hunnicutt added field goals from 28 and 36 yards to push the halftime lead to 23-6, and he provided the only points of the second half on a 21-yarder. Franks set it up with a 45-yard reverse, getting tackled at the 1-yard line before the Sooners' goal line offense got stuffed.

Jones failed to throw a touchdown pass for the second straight game and had two interceptions.

Barnett finished with 125 yards on 13-for-28 passing with one interception, losing for the first time in four career starts. He also fumbled a first-quarter handoff to James White, after White had already fumbled on his first carry of the game.

The Cyclones also turned it over when linebacker Jevohn Miller muffed a kickoff that was blown around by the wind, leading to Hunnicutt's third field goal of the opening half.

Iowa State had its lowest yardage output since being held to 183 in a 52-0 shutout at Oklahoma last season.

Analysts split on BlackBerry's fate (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A pair of Monday morning notes on Research In Motion paint sharply contrasting views of the company that makes the BlackBerry.

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu downgraded RIM shares to "neutral" from "buy" and said he expects increased competition to hurt the Canadian company's margins.

Scotia Capital analyst Gus Papageorgiou's dissenting opinion calls the stock "absurdly oversold" and posits that RIM has unique skills that will pay the bills for years to come.

"RIM remains a highly profitable company with a growing subscriber base yet it is trading as if the underlying business were distressed," wrote Papageorgiou, one of the few remaining analysts who has kept a relatively bullish outlook on the BlackBerry maker.

By contrast, Sterne Agee's Wu said the main reason he wasn't telling clients to sell their RIM holdings is the company's intrinsic value as a takeover target.

RIM shares, which touched a seven-year low of $15.98 on Friday, were up 3 percent at $16.50 on the Nasdaq at midmorning on Monday.

Wu said RIM's margins would take a hit after it suffered a massive network outage and as pricing pressures mount due to competition from HTC Corp, Amazon.com Inc, Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc.

In early October, millions of BlackBerry customers across four continents went without email, messaging and browsing service on their smartphones after a series of failures in RIM's private network.

"Network outages ... will likely put pressure on services and software margins as both carrier and enterprise customers receive concessions and demand discounts," Wu said.

For Papageorgiou, RIM's unique network sets the company apart, allowing for tailored data plans and reducing network traffic for carriers. "This is not an advantage that will go away anytime soon," he wrote.

RIM has also been criticized for poor performance in the face of stiff competition from Apple's iPhone and iPad, and devices powered by Google Inc's Android system.

Low-priced Android-based devices from the likes of China's Huawei are expected to swarm into the emerging markets where RIM has notched much of its recent sales growth.

Wu said he doubted that RIM could meet the average estimates of analysts for its quarterly results.

RIM said in September it expects to ship between 13.5 million and 14.5 million smartphones in the third quarter, which ended November 26. It reports results on December 15.

Analysts on average expect RIM to earn $1.22 a share on revenue of $5.31 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. That's the low end of RIM's own forecast of between $1.20 and $1.40 a share on sales of $5.3 billion to $5.6 billion.

Scotia's Papageorgiou is one of the most optimistic analysts, forecasting $1.34 a share.

Washington holiday season begins with arrival of White House Christmas tree (The Christian Science Monitor)

Washington ? The Washington holiday season got off to a festive start Friday when First Lady Michelle Obama presided over the arrival of the White House Christmas tree.

The picturesque scene, outside the North Portico of the White House facing Pennsylvania Avenue, offered a sharp contrast to scattered reports of violence ? including one shooting and one incident of pepper spraying ? that accompanied the predawn start of Black Friday shopping at malls around the country.

At 11:09 a.m. a green wagon loaded with a 19 foot-tall balsam fir was pulled up the White House driveway by two horses with wreathes and red bows around their necks. A Marine Band brass quintet struck up the German carol ?O Tannenbaum? (O Christmas Tree) as Mrs. Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha, and first dog Bo walked out the mansion?s front door.

After inspecting the tree, the Obamas posed for pictures with Sue and Tom Schroder whose Wisconsin farm ? dubbed Schroeder?s Forevergreens ? grew this year?s tree. After several minutes, the Obamas headed back into the White House. As she left, Mrs. Obama told the assembled reporters and news photographers, ?You all take care. Happy holidays.?

The arrival of the tree marks the beginning of a very active period at the White House, which last year hosted some 20 holiday parties and receptions involving 12,000 guests. In addition, some 100,000 visitors toured the mansion during the season when it is filled with Christmas decorations and the official tree is displayed in the Blue Room.

The full holiday party schedule for 2011 has not been announced. But some invitations ? featuring the presidential seal surrounded by a green holiday wreath and a big red bow ? have already gone out.

The First Lady?s office said Friday that military families would be the first to see this year's holiday decorations. She will host a special gathering for them November 30 where she will speak, and the White House chefs and florist will talk about holiday decorations and food. The theme of this year?s Blue Room Christmas tree will be honoring Blue star families, the White House said. Blue Star families are those who have a member serving in the military during a time of war.

Mrs. Obama?s office also said Gold Star families will take part in decorating a special Gold Star tree that will be placed at the visitors? entrance to the East Wing. Guests at White House holiday events enter through the East Wing entrance near where Mrs. Obama's office is located. Gold Star families are those who have a relative killed while serving in the Armed Forces in wartime.

The growers of this year???s official tree won the honor in a Christmas tree contest held in August by the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA).

This is the seventh time a Wisconsin grower has provided the White House tree, according to NCTA records which go back to 1966. North Carolina growers hold the record for providing the official White House tree, having done so 11 times. Wisconsin and Washington State are tied for second place with 7 wins each. This year is the first since 1998 when a balsam fir was the winning species.

While the Blue Room tree is the most highly decorated and has a place of honor, it is usually just one of many trees placed around the White House. Last year there were 19 trees in all.

White House holiday receptions include events for members of Congress and the administration, diplomats, and members of the media.

The early history of the White House Christmas tree is in dispute.  The Christmas Tree Association website says that New Hampshire native Franklin Pierce brought the first Christmas tree to the executive mansion in 1853. The White House Historical Association gives that distinction to President Benjamin Harrison in 1889.

The practice of having an ?official? Christmas tree decorated under the auspices of the First Lady began with Lou Henry Hoover in 1929. In 1961, Jacqueline Kennedy began the tradition of having a theme surrounding the decorations. Mrs. Kennedy?s first theme was ?Nutcracker Suite? based on Tchaikovsky?s ballet.

While the White House tree presentation has a festive air, some portions of the Christmas tree industry are suffering.

The Associated Press reports that Christmas tree growers in Texas and Oklahoma have been hard hit by drought which has killed thousands of trees. To meet local demand, some growers are importing trees from North Carolina. Growers from Texas and Oklahoma have not supplied a White House Christmas tree since records began in 1966.
